That article is a load of rubbish IMO. The fact that he writes more trying to explain himself then in the article seems to prove that.
He seems to think that Gears of War is the only third person shooter ever, and anyone making a third person shooter is copycatting GoW. By his logic, I could say that most RTS games have copycatted starcraft. Of course there is going to be similarities, the games are in the SAME GENRE.
Just like Relic pointed out, there isn't a cover system like GoW in Space Marine, nor is there any melee combat. In fact, the mechanics of combat focusing on staying in the fight more so through execution moves isn't anything like in GoW. Comparing the space marines chainsword to the chainsaw on GoW's gun simply doesn't hold any validity. That's almost like comparing a weapon in Modern Warfare to any other FPS. Not to mention, Games Workshop thought of it before GoW.
Bad analogy, Modern Warfare guns are
exactly like the other guns in other modern FPSs. Point is still good though.

He also seems to suggest that the "Orks" are similar to Lord of the rings orcs, so then therefore Space Marine copycatted that too. I surely don't need to say anything about this point, where did LOTR get its orcs from? Simple fantasy settings? Hmm, but I guess any idea with simple fantasy settings are copying LOTR though.
That's my rant done, I felt I had to say something, because I couldn't stand reading that and not sharing my opinion.
Orcs were created by Tolkien. Tolkien created the idea of modern fantasy Elves and Dwarf. Orcs and hobbits/halflings are his original creation.
With that said, there are MANY, MANY differences between Tolkien's Orcs and GW's Orks.
