Well the game has been out for over a month now and I have to say how HORRIBLY wrong that author was. Space Marine, besides being a TPS, is almost the exact opposite of GoW.
Instead of hiding behind cover taking pot shots at the enemy, you charge forward into the mass of Orks while unloading your entire clip into them. Instead of Meleeing people ONLY for the novelty of it, you actually are required to melee certain enemies to actually kill them. Also, love hiding behind a wall and regenerating health? Well in Space Marine you actually have to FIGHT to gain more health and do executions, which unlike GoW, actually has a game play purpose.
Now, how about the story? Is there a super
cheesy love subplot or some plot breaking inconsistencies? Nope. You are a Ultramarine whose job literally entails killing. That's it. Killing everyone, then finding where he needs to go with his merry band of followers to continue the Ork genocide. The story doesn't need to hide behind LAYERS of symbolism and is fairly straightforward as far as normal shoot'm up story lines go, but is almost DEAD on the type of mood and atmosphere that 40k brings with it.
Now, comparing how both games consist of heavily armored, super soldiers is one of the most oversimplified and uninformed statements made in that article as many posters have already mentioned on this forum and on his "website". He misused the point of comparing two things, which is to not only see how similar they are, but also recognize how different they are as well.
Also, not to mention that SM multiplayer with the addition of Exterminatus is actually worth playing after you beat the main campaign, with THOUSANDS of customizable options to make your perfect SM/CSM. Although being into TT, there still didn't seem like there was enough options for me
