This does run the risk of a premature release, Mythic did something similar when it released an 80% complete game back in 2007. Tier 4 incomplete, beta quality animations and with four missing classes. With an approximate annual upkeep cost of $1.5 million (excluding launch fees) anything less than their best is dangerous.

If we assume that March 2013 is the release date, 14 months from now, Vigil has been very quiet about the project; in fact, I can't think of a MMO that didn't have a full-function website 18 months prior to its release. So in my opinion a March 2013 release is unlikely, I would expect something much later.

THQ's fourth quarter results are due in March so I hope that will offer at least some catharsis.

I would agree that it is weird, that they still don't have working website, but i would also say that they are perhaps playing it safe.
This year (2011-2012) two big MMO franchizes came out or are about to came out, SWTOR and GW2, so i think they wanted to see what will those two bring on table.
Considering new game mechanics, new gameplay styles, perhaps something new to MMO genre, and at the same time, they didn't want to show what they have, so that the others can't borrow they ideas and use them(since both of those are launched before DMO).
So now that they saw what SWTOR brought to table, they will soon see what GW2 brings (since beta events are about to start soon), and then they will roll the ball.
So i believe fully working DMO website perhaps even with forums will come in next 2-3 months together with new trailers, because E3 is like 5 months away, and they promised fully working demo at this years E3. So they need to start building hype atleast month or two before E3.

and lets not forget that Darksiders 2 comes around easter, so they have to market that first, and then they can put full attention and the whole Vigil team into DMO!

Another possibility is that they wanted to present the game in a fairly finished state and get the hype ball rolling much later on than has typically been the case simply so that people don't burn out from overhype long before the game is released.

I wonder if he's going to take a pay cut to save the company some money.

...

Haha.

Haha.

And he did, a 50% pay cut and the loss of 2/3 of his golden parachute severance pay... Gotta say I didn't expect a big wig to take a pay cut, but cudos to him for doing it.

And the future success of DMO will depend a lot on how well THQ does in the lead up to july 23rd.
It's still running but it's not out of the woods yet.

In further news THQ is looking for to partner with another company for DMO. http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/02/thq-a ... lennium-o/
This is a sensible move, they want to spread the cost but keep some of the proceeds. It's also great news for us since should THQ fold it's more likely that DMO will go on.

Good news there. Saw it on IGN too. Apparently they are looking for another partner for DMO40k

Should be some interesting developments going on.

THQ's response

Quote:
THQ has not cancelled its 2014 line-up, and has not made any decisions regarding the planned MMO. As part of the ongoing review of our business, we have made decisions to ensure that the company is strategically addressing the most attractive markets. As we have previously announced, we have dramatically reduced our commitment to the kids' boxed games sector which leads to a significantly more focused release schedule moving forward. Our slate for calendar 2012 and beyond is focused on high-quality core games and continues to build our digital platform and business. We are excited for our pipeline of original and high-quality content along with our relationships with some of the best talent in the industry.

Since I'm late to this, I'm gonna respond now.

From my understanding, they're keeping their main IPs. This means games like the Saints Row series, Dark Siders and their Warhammer 40k games. Also means it's highly unlikely we'll see a new Homeworld game, although there is a rumor that we may see the next 'Homeworld' game as a Battlefleed Gothic game.
