Alright, I thought I'd post another of my ideas. Feel free to stop me if you wanna. :)

So, tightly knitted to the other idea I posted in the General forum, it's also about adding interesting content from the Warhammer 40k universe ( people enjoy calling the stuff fluff, as you all most likely know..) into the game. It's an old idea of mine, I think I had it way back when I first heard of DMO.

Recently I tried to mash some improvement into the concept and figured out some aspects of it would actually be quite useful for instanced PvP concepts. Some stuff would actually fit well into the PvP match types thread... but as they're not ideas solely tied to a defined PvP match but rather just an addition to instanced PvP altogether I decided to make a new topic about it.

Yes, I'm being crazy nerd again. Sorry.

The idea...

The idea was originally about players being able to acquire certain points in PvP matches by fighting and fulfilling objectives ( nothing like Honor Points, more like something tied to a single BG/Scen) which they then would be able to use to "respawn" as a special type of character if they so choose.

The things I had in mind were stuff like Terminators, Sternguard/Vanguard Veterans ( Sword Brethren in the case of BTs), Apothecaries, Chaplains, Techmarines, Grey Knights, Deathwatch SMs, Inquisitors of all three Ordos... Stormtroopers ( given they're not a class), Ogrynn, Chaos Champions of This or That One, Daemons, Farseers, Autarchs, Exarchs, Avatars of Khaine... Dreadnoughts and Wraithlords were on the list too. That kind of stuff. It's a long list, you can imagine.

It was intended to last for the duration of the match. Other specific things I imagined were not being able for more than a couple of players per match to "ascend" at any given time. The things were not even meant to be ridiculously overpowered, just as close to the power they'd have in fluff as possible. They'd also award extra points ( like Honor) for opponents if they'd get vanquished.

And I didn't even mean for all of those or any to be available in any type of match. Maybe just some specific ones. Or maybe just in some very specific ones? Different types of choices for difference BGs?

The whole point of this would be to make stuff a bit more interesting. May obviously lead to balance issues and strange situations.

My questions to you are:

1) What do you think?

2) Do you think it would be worth it to try to make such a concept work just for the sake of adding some "spice" and fluff?

Also, tied to the PvP match types thread, something along the lines of having characters assume special characters ( but without having to buy something like that for points) could be tied to certain types of objectives. Like the Assasinate idea dechuri had... but also so much more.

Any thoughts on that perhaps?

This was my first thought:

"Oh great, another idiot trying to buy a win."

I realize your idea isn't being made for me ( ), but I don't PvP for stuff, and this is too stuff-like for me.

Like you said (kind of), it would be a niche thing relegated to specific battlegrounds.

But hey, you have the Warp on your side. Any story becomes easier to pitch using the Warp, which is likely how Vigil is going to pitch their own story. "The Warp did it!" Otherwise, I can't see a Space Marine being turned into a Daemon for the duration of a battleground being explained away easily.

Don't be silly, Gosh. A Space Marine wouldn't be turned into a Daemon. You actually made me laugh, to be honest.

Also, regarding "stuff-like" stuff, I had already tons of different concepts that would not make it something of a thing you'd have to work your ass off for. One of them, for example, was being able to pull that thing only once per week. To make sure you get those points and use them when it suits you. That was only including things like heroes, which would essentially be that 1st suggestion I made ( the thing with the top 50 PvP ladder) on a smaller scale, but would not include objectives-tied things like... I don't know. :)

Of course, that one had it's own bunch of problems. And I couldn't find a really nigh-perfect concept and actually forgot most of them. :?

Also, the "Warp" is the new "Character X went insane."...

Expect heavy involvement of Warpstorms that may catapults you about anywhere... for any reason... to suite any need... oh, and if it was just you it'd hurl trough space and time...

Like in console games; hero characters.

I'm sure they have something like this planned.

And how can you be so sure?

Yeah, I wouldn't be sure. Oddly I thought something like this would be interesting, too. There are a lot of cool professions in 40k which wouldn't be appropriate as regular classes, but would be cool as temporary, earned classes for PvP. So yeah, I'm all for something like this. Having points earned via PvP success to use to play fun classes for a bit or to access other PvP features which are best used sparingly would be interesting.

Would also just like to point out that something like this might work for PvE too, in a way to two. :)

That'd be a bit harder for them as then there's a real issue of balance and preventing exploitation. PvE content, especially when it comes to end-game stuff, is something they have to get "just right" otherwise the game will suffer quite a lot for it. Most people are in it for the PvE first-and-foremost after all. It'd be cool if they could find a way to make it work, but I doubt that the time required would justify it. It will be challenging enough for them to make it work with the actual character classes and their abilities. Throw in a bunch of weird stuff and they'll be chasing exploits and people farming gear using methods unforeseen for some time.

Granted, points for awesome wouldn't work in that way... easily and without all sorts of problems. Even if you had to actually collect points per instance instead of just hoarding them over months.

I'd like to remind you that my idea is more about putting stuff from the fluff into the game and less so about interesting game mechanics and stuff like that. :P

See any way how something like that could work in PvE? Possibly without any kind of farmable points involved? :)

And there are ways, I suppose. You could just simply have raid members assume special roles based on certain encounters. For example, it's not hard to imagine that people could be driving tanks in PvE content ( they already do in some games)... so why not have somebody drive something that your character wouldn't be exactly driving...

Like, you just sort of "replace" your character with a Dreadnought, Wraithlord, Bloodthirster ( that's a big bad Greater Daemon, if anyone was wondering)... to do stuff like tank something bad that normal people wouldn't even try tanking. Or whatever.

And it doesn't even have to be something like that. Could be a hero unit, commander... elite units like Terminators, Obliterators... or even Grey Knights. You just tailor the encounters with that in mind... so people are supposed to use them to make it.

Obviously some guilds would fall apart because of things like "Who's gonna drive it today?" or "Who's gonna be the Chaos Lord today?"... well, that'd suck.
