I play Ragnarok Online, they have something called a Class Tree. I can see this being utilized in DMO but I'm just wondering what you guys think on the matter.

EXAMPLE:

Scout --> Tactical Marine --> Devastator?
Scout --> Assault Marine --> Terminator?

Boy --> Nob --> Warboss?
Boy --> Tank Busta --> Flash Git?

It's Black Templars, so there are no scouts and no devastator marines. They mentioned the way that BTs handle their new recruits is one reason they were selected for the DMO marine group, so I imagine that you would start as a Neophyte and then graduate to an Inititate after some time of character building.

As for class trees, it's certainly possible. Impossible to say at this point. One of the 40k RPGs uses class trees itself, so it wouldn't be too big of a stretch for this to as well. They haven't really gone into any kind of detail regarding this stuff though, other than there will be levels and classes.

Personally, I like the idea of individual classes having a lot of depth to them. So I'd prefer there not be a ton of classes with very little flexibility, but rather, not quite as many classes which instead offer a lot of options.

Maybe they'd go the Talent Tree route? Like in WoW and Warhammer Online.

Like WoW, Warhammer, Diablo 2, and countless other games. Yeah, I dunno. All we can do is speculate now I'm afraid.

It was said that Space Marines wouldn't be playable straight from the get-go, so that leaves us with a couple options: Your character turns into a Space Marine (class trees), or they go the pure lame route and make it like Death Knights in WoW, where you could make a Death Knight only after reaching a certain level on another character.

I doubt they'll take the Death Knight route simply because it wouldn't just be Space Marines as the "hero class." And Space Marines, being without a doubt a cut above the class that unlocked it, would obsolete said class. I don't think the developers would want to obsolete most of their classes just to introduce the "better" classes. There is also the consideration that if they take this route, we'll have serious overpopulation of Space Marines unless they limit the class upgrade to the class you've already leveled.

It is most likely that they'll do a class tree option, which I find to be the better option considering how many issues there were with Death Knights. WoW made the mistake, and hopefully Vigil will learn from it. :D

What I am worried about is how dramatically the class upgrade will effect their power in combat. Realistically it should be a huge upgrade, but that would make max level the "only thing that matters," just like pretty much every other MMO. Levels become extremely boring when I know the class, know exactly what I'm going to do at max level, but have to pass by a pointless grind that I've done countless times before just because the developers want me to invest more time into their game. I wonder how much content could be stuffed into a game when there isn't a need to spread it so thin over so many levels.

According to the codex a space marine has to be a devastator and assault marine before he gets to be a tactical one so making it linear wouldn't be the best. Also Terminators can be ranged combatants and making them melee only would make some pandas sad. (me)

I would personally love to see branched class-trees. Let me expand on this idea.

Once you become a space marine you can go in several directions mainly melee oriented, ranged oriented and support. Melee would include Assault and maybe another melee based marine without jump-packs (play-style similar to DoW2's Commander). Ranged would inlcude both Tactical and Devastator marines. And support could include apothecaries (healer), tech-marines (pet-class w/ servitor or turret) and chaplains (?). You may say, damn that's a lot of sub-classes, but think about the fact that a lot of people will choose the space marine class and something like this could provide the diversity a popular class needs.
I like the idea of being able to become a more elite version of each class. This could be done via Terminator Honors, becoming Sergeants or even Veterans (Vanguards, Sternguards).

This could work for Chaos Spaces marines very well. It would be mostly the same, assault and other melee in one branch, CSM and havocs in another. Think about being able to be a God-dedicated marine. You could put Khorne Berserkers in the melee subclass and Plague, Noise (me wants) and Rubrics marines in the ranged one. Or you could make them opposites of the support Space marines i mentioned. DoW2's Plague champion could heal, Rubrik's Inferno Bolts make them excellent anti heavy-armor, and keeping noise marines outside of the ranged tree means you could have one with melee weapons and Doom Sirens (sweet). Possessed CSM could be in the melee tree for those who prefer Chaos Undivided.
For the elite versions you could have Terminators, Chosens and Aspiring Champion options to pair them with the terminators/sergeants/veterans SM options.

I know some of this might be tricky to implement lore-wise but i hope we get wide variety within each SM/CSM class.

Sadly specialization seems to be the only way MMOs are able to attempt to make you feel like your character is unique. But the problem is, once 'specialized' there is a need to always switch back to your 'other spec', maybe because its the FOTM or its used for e.g. for PvE or PvP only.
